Ure's Dictionary of Arts, Manufactures and Mines, 4 vols, 1878 ed. Ure's was first published about 1853, and at the time was far, far ahead of the times. Ure's relentless quest for writing about key areas of science and manufacturing produced a work like no other. I (FH) use this work all the time, as it is the only competent source of the period, and lets us look into the past for methodology, science and the why certain things were done a certain way. it is an historical scientist's dream. This is a later edition than I was aware of and is quite rare, as are the original volumes. This set belonged to Hiram Johnson of Eureka, Nevada, a prominent merchant in that mega-silver mining camp.
