Early Utah pass signed by an important figure in Utah history. Pass issued for 1877 to W.H. Hurlburt (Canada Southern Line). Signed by John Sharp as superintendent. Printed on gray cardstock by Hosford & Sons, NY. Some toning. John Sharp (1820-1891) was a prominent leader in the LDS church in the 19th century in Utah Territory. He came to Salt Lake City in 1850 with other Mormon pioneer parties. Six years later, he was appointed first bishop of the Salt Lake Twentieth Ward and made a member of the LDS Church's Council of Fifty. At the historic Transcontinental Railroad Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869, it was Sharp who was sent by Brigham Young to represent the Mormon Church. Later, he was an officer for this railroad, the Utah Southern and Union Pacific. His practice of plural marriage caused him to be prosecuted for unlawful cohabitation under the Edmunds Act in 1885. Unlike other prominent Mormons charged, Sharp plead guilty and paid a fine. His guilty plea led the church to ask for his resignation as first bishop, which he did.
