Stock Certificate from the Utah Midland Railway Co .Stock Certificate #1. Issued to President, J.J. Hagerman. Issued on November 13, 1889 at Colorado Springs to Hagerman. Signed by president J. J. Hagerman. Size 10.5 by 6.75 inches. In fair condition, Not Cancelled. Really nice vignette of train, coming around the bend. Cancelled with punched over signatures. Single pinhole top right, and slight fold creases. Receipt completed and attached via fold. Very good condition. Certificate #1 issued in 1889 to famous industrialist John James Hagerman, also the President. The Utah Midland Railway was organized 2 times but never built. This certificate represents the second organization in 1886 and is cancelled by a purple ink stamp that states "New Certificate Issued" Reverse transfer is completed by Hagerman to the Colorado Midland Railway Company, and appoints L. C. Deming as Attorney, dated November 29, 1889. Red ink writing on reverse indicates an issue with unpaid subscription and a release of liability . Hagerman is credited with almost single-handedly raising the money to build the Colorado Midland Railroad.

J.J. Hagerman (March 23, 1838 ñ September 13, 1909) was one of the most influential men in territorial New Mexico and an integral figure in the Colorado Labor Wars in Cripple Creek in 1903-04. Hagerman owned mines, helped in the financial development of railroads and irrigation, founded and built up towns and cities, donated large plots of land for public and educational use and was a signer of the original handwritten Waite Agreement re: Mine and Mine Owners in Cripple Creek, June 4, 1894, along with David H. Moffat.
