Specimen proof. c 186-. Two nice vignettes: allegorical with eagle and shield and quaint country scene. Geo. F Nesbitt of New York printer. Green on white. Glued to cardboard backing. rounded corners. Fold on right. etc. On August 20, 1864 Under the so-called “Humboldt Right”, the Utica Bullion Mining Company laid claim to use all the waters of the Humboldt River. The mining company established a dam across the Humboldt River below the Humboldt lakes to process its ore. The dam became a center of considerable controversy as it prevented upstream migration of fish and was eventually blown up in June 1884 by a party of masked men, after which the mining company’s claim to any waters of the Humboldt River seemingly collapsed for want of use. [Nevada Water Basin Information and Chronology Series, http://water.nv.gov/mapping/chronologies/humboldt/] If you are lucky enough to won this unique piece of history, the University of Nevada Special Collections deposit has the mining company records. "The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence to Samuel Campbell from Walter Schmidt, providing reports of mining and milling operations of the Utica Bullion Mining Company and of the operations of the Desert Crystal Salt Company. Other documents contained in the collection include legal documents such as contracts, mining laws, water and mineral claims, deeds, agreements, abstracts of title, certificate of incorporation, bylaws, and court orders." A visit there would seem very enlightening. Prag Colelction
