Authenticated letter handwritten and signed by "J. C. Calhoun" (John C. Calhoun), vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Calhoun was serving as the 16th United States Secretary of State at the time of this letter. Calhoun was the first to resign from the vice president's office, was an ardent champion of state's rights, Secretary of War under Monroe, Secretary of State under Tyler. Two pages, 4.5" x 7", Jul 10 (1844). A letter of introduction to the Hon. Mr. Mason. "I understand that there are two vacancies of purserships in the Navy at present. I take the liberty of naming Mr. Carroll, the bearer of this ... he comes highly recommended by a friend in whom I place much confidence ..."
