Mariano Vallejo sold David Broderick a lot on Vallejo Street, June 7, 1853, and signed the deed "M.J. Vallejo" at lower right. Vallejo is one of the most important people in northern California history. Born in Monterey in 1807, Vallejo found himself well educated and a social climber. He became commander of the San Francisco Presidio in 1833. In 1834 he was granted Rancho Petaluma, he laid out the town of Sonoma in 1835, and that year he was put in charge of the entire "northern Frontier" by the Mexican Government. Vallejo quickly came to the conclusion that this area of California should not be governed by the powers in Mexico City, thinking the US a better parent. in 1846 his patience was tested by the Bear Flag Revolt led by William B. Ide and his group of drunken "hoods", as would be said today. Vallejo, as a Claifornio, had to withstand the throng of lawsuits brought on by '49ers who wanted land for free and did not respect the Mexican Land grants. He went on to be a successful businessman and is laid to rest in Sonoma. Vallejo signed documents are very rare, and this may be the first we've had in decades.
