100 shares Van de Water Gold & Silver Mining Co. of Nevada, cert. #2590 signed by C. J. Vanderbilt, pres., Harry McCoy, secy. issued to George F. Stevens. Countersigned and registered Jan 14, 1882. Assigned Jan. 17, 1882 by George Stevens, George J. Draper and S.S. Livez. Located: Humboldt Co., Indian District, NV. Raised company seal. Three months after this certificate signed, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, second of Cornelius Vanderbilt's 13 children committed suicide at age 51 on April 2, 1882 at the Glenham Hotel on 5th Ave. in New York City. He didn't have a good relationship with his father. He was diagnosed with epilepsy at 18 and frail of stature. He ran out of money and charged bills to father's company. In November, 1849 his father had him arrested and committed to the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum in New York until February 1850. On April 2, 1882 at 2:00 pm he shot himself in the head and died four hours later. He was discovered in his room by George Terry, who was referred to in Vanderbilt's obituary as "his friend and constant companion." Printed: American Bank Note Co.
