Three hand-carved Verdite elephants from Zimbabwe, unsigned. Verdite is a rare, semi-precious green mineral found in Zimbabwe. These carvings are a traditional form of Shona art, valued for the stone's intrinsic beauty, featuring swirling patterns and different shades of green. Elephant family ranges in size from 3 inches to 6 inches in length and from 3 to 5 inches tall. Mama elephant is the beauty of this bunch. The younger elephants tusks have been removed to prevent breakage. The elephant is a common subject in Shona art. The pieces in this sale were purchased at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show about 25 years ago. Today Verdite is considered a gemstone and referred to as "green gold" and sculptures are rarely made
in todays' market.
