Verdite Rhinoceros Hand-Carved by unknown artist from Zimbabwe. A monster weighing in at 30 pounds and measuring about 17 x 10 inches and 6 inches tall from base to hump. Various shades of green with swirling patterns and varying color intensity. Verdite is a Serpentine-like mineral dating back 3500 million years ago and also known as Bud Stone or African Jade. This piece is from the eastern part of Zimbabwe and South Africa. Commonly used in Zimbabwe Shona carvings for many decades. The pieces in this sale were purchased at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show about 25 years ago. Today Verdite is considered a gemstone so larger sculptures are increasingly rare as it is primarily used to make small figurines and ornament or jewelry. This piece is of average quality stone, but the size of this hand-carved Rhino make this a rare opportunity in today's market. Pick up is suggested.
