Oil on board, painting of Vernal Falls in Yosemite with storm clouds rising in the background. Original 25"x19" frame. Signed by the artist at bottom right. Benjamin Willard Sears (1846-1905) was born in Guilford, CT on May 16, 1846; Sears' father had come to California in 1852 following placer mining opportunities near Sonora. Ben and his two brothers made the trip to Sonora via Panama in 1862. He came to San Francisco in 1868 and worked as a photographer in several galleries until switching to oil painting in the early 1870s, eventually being hired as a sketch artist for the U.S. Signal Coast Survey. He is best known for his artwork of the Sierra Nevada's and Yosemite, which he captured in vivid detail.
The painting is in excellent condition, retaining its original detail and realistic color. There is some superficial discoloration on the frame; see photos.
