Exceptionally rare. Mono Lake adjacent mining camp. Detroit Copper Mining Company (lower left). Dateline Vernon, Mono Co., Cal., Nov. 25th, 1882. Issued to Monroe Budds for $30. Signed by mine supt. Allen Bird. Signed on the back by Budds. Vignette of miner pushing ore cart out of tunnel. Red print on yellow paper. Bacon & Co. Print, SF. Fold, spindle cancel, pin holes. 3.5 x 8.5" The Walker Lake Bulletin (Aug. 8, 1883) reports that the Detroit copper mine was the first copper smelting ever done in Mono County and has shipped seven tons of bullion to date. It states that "Vernon is a prosperous camp and in one respect, is a curiosity among mining communities, as it has no saloon. This is a fault which will probably soon be corrected." The Mono Herald and Bridgeport Chronicle-Union (Jan. 31, 1885) lists the Detroit Copper Mining Company's claim (also known as the Morning Star) as tax delinquent. It very specifically locates the mine as being in the Jordan Mining District, Mono County, California on Red Hill, 6 miles west of Mono Lake, 4 miles east of Lundy, and bounded by the Mammoth Mine and the S. O. Johnson's Mine. It describes the property as being 1500 feet in length, 600 feet wide, and including a tramway and smelting facilities. A May 1883 article from the same paper mentions the dismissal of a lawsuit between the Bodie & Benton Railway Co. and the Detroit Copper Mining Co.
