Very early Aurora mining deed, issued when Nevada was still part of Utah Territory! Dated Dec. 1st, 1860. Contract between E.F. Mitchell of Utah Territory and William H. Heighe for $500 being "an undivided ten feet interest in the first Extension North, of the Esmeralda Lode in the Esmeralda District." Samuel Clemens never wrote a word about this property. Signed by Mitchell and EP Peckham, Commissioner of Utah Territory in California. Red seal. Black print on blue paper. 14 x 8.5" The original district was ten miles square and named by M. J. Corey, one of the three original discoverers int he summer of 1860. James Braley, ER Hicks and Corley were camped at Esmeralda Hill when Hicks went to shoot some game for breakfast. He noticed the quartz outcrop, broke off chunks and hauled them back to camp. His partners tested the quartz for silver and gold. The first claim was the Old Winnemucca ledge, located August 25, 1860. The first mill was built in June of 1861, and within a year there were nine more mills. Its activity is unknown, but we have sold stock certificates for this company.
