This style, with the dropped shank, large 10-point rowel and curled chap guard was in use by vaqueros in Mexico and California in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The stud on the side of the rowel indicates that this spur originally had jingle-bobs attached. This was obviously a very well-crafted item when new.
