Very, very early Wells Fargo Virginia City, Nevada Territory check issued June 24, 1861, just three months after Nevada Territory was created (from Utah Territory). A few of these checks surfaced at auctions over the past few years from the Prag Collection, but this is earlier than any of those offered. Plus, many of these early blue Wells Fargo checks have no dateline so you can't be sure if they were issued in Carson or on the Comstock. This one does have a Virginia City dateline. Issued to J Everett for $200 by Charles Strong. 2.75" x 6.5" Blue paper. Spindle cancel and repaired damage on right side (please see photos). Excelsior Print, SF. This will certainly be the earliest check in your Nevada and Comstock collection! At this time, Charles Strong was the superintendent of the Gould & Curry Mine in Virginia City and oversaw the construction of its impressive mill, the first great mill on the Comstock.
