Very large (6 x 16") and heavy iron ingot mold used to cast 1,000 ounce "transportation" bullion ingots in the 19th century for shipping to US Mints, like the Carson City Mint. This piece was acquired by our consignor in Mound House, Nevada, therefore we suspect it was used in one of the many Carson River mills that processed ore from the Comstock Lode. We can read the letter "O" and then "Co." on the inside bottom. The letters in-between were chiseled out. We suspect this mold could have been used by the Omega Mill (Sevenmile Canyon), controlled by Mackay & Fair in the late 1870s and used to process Con. Virginia ore. (Or the Occidental Mill (on the Occidental Grade)?) We have sold Pacific Mill & Mining Co. Assay forms listing this mill as the source of HUGE ingots made for the company. The mold was likely taken to Dayton and repurposed, and they chiseled out the letters to take over ownership. An excellent Comstock Nevada mining artifact!
