This is an interesting and rare Nevada mining revenue check. The form is a Virginia City, Devil's Gate Mill, Bank of California check from the 1870s. It has been repurposed in 1897 to act as a check for the Ludwig Copper Mine (handwritten on left side) and now stamped B& E Exchange Bank in Carson. The other Ludwig Copper Mine checks known are all like this. This check is issued to John D. Ludwig (and signed by him on the back), namesake for the town of Ludwig, Nevada. Also signed by Harry M. Gorham, well-known 1880s and 1890s Comstock mine superintendent (most notably for the Savage). Gorham detailed his experiences in the memoir "My Memories of the Comstock." John D. Ludwig was an Indian-fighter in California in the 1860s and 70s and discovered a copper deposit 4 miles southwest of Yerington in Smith Valley, Nevada (Lyon County) in the 1870s. He eventually sold his interests and the Nevada-Douglas Copper Co. established a townsite at the mine in 1908. The name was changed to Ludwig in 1911, and the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad served the town starting in 1911. Mining activity heavily declined after 1914 and the site is now a ghost town.
