Extremely good. Double-sided check. One side: Dateline Central City, Colorado, Jan. 23, 1865. Clark & Company, Bankers. Pay to Howard H. Potter of Baraboo, Wisconsin, $1,000. Signed by C. Tyler. Orange 2 cent adhesive revenue stamp attached. Byers & Dailey, Printers, Denver. Reverse is blank receipt form for Clark, Gruber & Co., Bankers in Denver, Colorado. Clark & Gruber set up a two-story bank building in Denver in 1860 to capitalize on the gold rush in Pikes Peak, Colorado. While they originally planned on shipping gold dust back East to be Federal mints, high transportation costs led them to build their own mint. They minted thousands of coins over the next two years. This facility was purchased by the U.S. government in 1862. Clark & Gruber went on to found the First National Bank of Denver in 1865. Some soiling, one small tear on bottom, and cut cancel. Extremely rare!
