Waimanalo Sugar Company (Oahu, H.I.). Certificate no. 52. Issued for 52 shares to A.J. Cartwright on May 1st, 1878 in Honolulu (two weeks after incorporation). Signed by Thomas Cummins as president and the company treasurer. Not cancelled. Certificate measures 9" x 11" Blank reverse. Folds. This company started in 1878 and closed in 1947. It was one of the smaller sugar plantations. Alexander J. Cartwright is considered to be the "father of baseball" having been the first to diagram a baseball diamond and creating rules that were incorporated from his Knickerbocker firefighter "town ball" club in New York during the 1840s. Cartwright moved to the Hawaiian Islands after heading to California during the Gold Rush. He served as Honolulu fire chief from 1850-1863 and encouraged the monarchy to bring the game of baseball to Hawaii. He died in 1892. (Prag Collection) City: Honolulu State: Hawaii Date: hwac# 34356
