Large (11" x 16.5") Memorandum of Bullion from the Savage Mine, Assayed at the Savage Assay Office. Datelined Virginia, Nev. May 19, 1869. Three deposits from the Nevada Mill. Three bars, .974 to .976 silver fineness, weighing a total of 3,685.40 ounces after melting and worth $6,372.55 Signed by D.W. Balch as assayer. Folds and other light wear. The Nevada Mill was located on Mill Street in Virginia City and was originally owned and operated by the Empire Mill and Mining Co. Beginning in 1867, it primarily ran Chollar-Potosi ore. D.W. Balch previously worked for the Gould & Curry Mill, as well as the Savage Assay Office in the 1860s. He also very briefly served as the assayer for the Carson City Mint in 1869. Balch was also present at the infamous Nevada & Oregon Railway meeting in Reno in 1881 where opposing parties of stockholders got into a disagreement that ended with gunfire. Balch was among those shot and injured (the bullet went through his wrist and into his lungs). He survived. City: Virginia City State: Nevada Date: HWAC# 50970
