Unissued receipt from the County Treasurer as ordered by the County Court of Carson County, Utah Territory. We can date this to pre-1858. It was in this year that Governor Brigham Young recalled all Mormons back to Salt Lake City to prepare for a confrontation with the United States Government. When Judge Orson Hyde and the other Mormon officials left, no replacements were named. The 'Lucky Bill' Thorrington was hung by a citizen group, the good citizens of Genoa petitioned Governor Cummings of the Utah Territory to appoint a judge. He appointed Judge John C. Childs. Childs tried twice to hold elections, but for a variety of reasons he was sabotaged both times. Hence this area was left without any government until Nevada became a territory in 1861 and Governor Nye appointed county officials. Few Mormon official documents have been scene and they have been on blue paper - just like this one. Copies of some of the earliest Carson County documents are included (toll road for Emigrant Kanyon; suit against Chorpenning for mules, vice, hammer, etc.; act to regulate water; land claim by Nick Ambrosia; sale of land to Lucky Bill Torrington, etc.). These can all be found online through the Nevada State Archives! City: Carson County State: Nevada Date: HWAC# 99328
