Lot of 2. 1) Membership certificate for Charles J. Gavin, elected Member National Council of Administration, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. September 1st, 1938. Signed by Commander in Chief Eugene I. Van Antwerp and Adjutant General RB Handy Jr. Gold seal with ribbon and logo with shield bookended by American flags. Printed by Ortmann Engraving Co. Kansas City. 11 x 14" Some wrinkling around edges. 2) Photograph of seven soldiers posing with a memorial plaque to the USS Maine, whose sinking precipitated the Spanish American War. White writing at the bottom says "Veterans of Foreign Wars of USA, De Clan Harton Commander." 8 x 9.5" Two damaged corners. It is unclear if Charles Gavin, who the certificate is issued to, is one of the 7 in the photo (the people are not identified). We looked and his name does not appear related to the USS Maine (or the Rough Riders), so we're assuming he received the certificate for service in WWI. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was first founded by James C. Putnam on September 29, 1899, and then was congressionally chartered in 1936 under the Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The purpose of the VFW is to speed rehabilitation of the nation's disabled and needy veterans, assist veterans' widows and orphans and the dependents of needy or disabled veterans, and promote Americanism by means of education in patriotism and by constructive service to local communities.
