Very attractive vintage copper charger plate. Mint condition. Original label on reverse reads: "California Cloissone 1958 Hand Decorated Enamel on Copper by Landau and Associates Los Angeles" Large thick copper charger plate or platter. Measures 23.5" diameter and approx. 2" dip or depth. Hanging bracket included for mounting on wall to display. Bottom has 6 felt pads for table top use. Produced by Landau Goldsmith, Landau & Associates, known for vintage artistic home goods hand decorated with enamel. Charger Plates have been in use since the 1300s, at least, and were originally known as "Charge our" plates by the English, although they are also called under plates or chop plates. They are not used for food, but as a tray or platter to contain other serving dishes, sometimes for the purpose of absorbing heat from hot service dishes to prevent table burns, which is why copper is a popular material. For centuries charger plates have been considered part of the dinner table decor and made in artistic designs and styles to compliment the china and porcelain ware for the wealthy. As such, many antique charger plates are now considered collectible works of art, just as porcelain and china is. This floral design of gold, orange, yellow and blue enamel is stunning with a beautiful autumn vibe. Similar, much more common pieces on eBay are considerably smaller, (6"-7") and do not compare to this 24" display piece. City: State:California Date:1958
