Approx 3' x 4' and 2" thick. One side highly varnished. Burl wood has a long and involved history in California. Burl is a grain characteristic that happens in many types of wood and results from a growth on a tree which forms a knot that can grow into large, knobby looking growths on the base and trunk of the tree. These growths or burls are due to stress caused by injury, fungus, virus, or insects. In addition, rapid growth in burls causes further stress and pressure on the wood and all these things combine to form intense grain patterns in the wood. In the early 20th century, lumber companies in California cut down redwood forests for timber. The lumber companies wanted straight grain redwood with nothing unusual. However, artisans and woodworkers soon recognized how special burlwood pieces were. Into the 60s and 70s, demand for burl rose. Some say burlwood evokes emotions through its unusual grain patterns, and the more burly or unusual the patterns are, the more desirable. Often, the most burly pieces are old growth, with no sapwood and distinct coloration or discoloration that occurs with mineral staining and voids and areas of dark grain, as is characteristic of burly grain from knots and growths. Mineral staining occurs when the tree or burl is submerged in water for a long period and very wavy or "curly" grains occur due to compression from being on hillsides or slopes under increased pressure. The uniqueness of each piece of burlwood, adds to its appeal, as no two pieces are alike. This particular slab is a beautfiul example of burlwood, believed to be from California redwood, due to the coloring, size and region. It was a gift to Pierce Powell many years ago, from a friend who possibly cut the slab and laquerred the piece himself. It has the very desireable "live edge" on 3/4 of the slab, with one cut edge that is perfectly straight. Pieces of wood are often cut like this for the purposes of making a wood bench, with the flat edge where two pieces create an angle between the back and the seat. The varnish or lacquer appears to be applied by an amateur and co vers only one side of the slab, which fits with the background we know from our consignor. This slab was used by Pierce Powell as a coffee table top inside the Old V & T Railroad Depot for many years, during the notorious late night gatherings, jam sessions and wild parties hosted by Pierce following Virginia City's "Hey Day" of psychedelic rock music.
