Virginia City Farriers Forge Wall c. 1910 with Blacksmith Shop Tools. 7 Boards--probably from Dowling's Blacksmith & Farrier Shop (B Street & Taylor Streets in Virginia City).

Three 8ft boards and four 16ft boards, all but one 8 ft board are 1 ft wide. Recovered during a 1990s remodel of a historic farrier's forge in Virginia City, this extraordinary 16-foot wall (assembled height 6 ft 8 inches) is one of the most complete surviving examples Comstock-era craftsmanship. Retaining its original soot charring, and nail patterns, the wall bears dozens of authentic branding-iron test impressions--each representing a local rancher whose stock was served by the shop. The wall was salvaged intact by John William Vaughan circa 1995 and preserved with nine original farrier and blacksmith tools, discovered within the wall cavity. Physical and documentary evidence indicate a probable origin from Dowling's Blacksmith & Farrier Shop, established 1861 or Burke's Old Blacksmith's Shop, which was in operation circa 1880's, according to an antique billhead we have located. The site at B Street and Taylor Street is documented in both the Western Nevada Historic Photo Collection and the Historic Marker Database and is listed as a contributing property within the Virginia City Historic District (NRIS #6600458) The wall's surface preserves clear strata of forge soot and dozens of branding iron impressions, providing a tangible record of the ranching and horseshoeing trades that supported Nevada's mining frontier. A rare and regionally important artifact suitable for museum or advanced private collection display. Dimensions: 6ft 8 in H x 16 ft L.
