Lot of three unused illustrated treasurer drafts from the Young America Engine Co., No. 2. 187-. Printed by J.D. Bethel & Co., Printers, Virginia. Great vignette of fire wagon. Each measures 4.25" x 13" with stub. Diagonal crease running through right side and light toning. The Young America Engine Co. No. 2 was organized in 1861 with Jacob Young as the foreman. As this was one of a handful of fire companies, there was fierce competition. Sometimes, this competition got out of control. Companies rushed to a fire in 1863 which turned into a riot. The end result was a member of Young America Engine Company being shot and killed by an Assistant Chief of the Virginia City Fire Department. In 1872, the company purchased the first steam fire engine in Nevada, a Silsby, housing it in a new, one-story building with a basement on this site, next to the Wells Fargo Building. They were one of only two fire companies to survive the great fire of 1875. They disbanded in 1877. [Ref: http://www.storeycounty.org/Fire/History.asp] (Prag Collection)
