Lot of two historic Virginia City area mining stocks from the 1800s:

1. Goodman Gold & Silver Mining Company. Devils Gate Mining District, Nevada (printed at top center). Dateline Virginia City, Nevada March 13, 1874. Certificate No. 42, issued to William Downer for 1000 shares ($100 per share) on January 6, 1887. Signed by John Mills (president) and miles Goodman (secretary). Pen cancelled. Two mining vignettes of a prospector (one underground). Printed by H.S. Crocker & Co., San Francisco. Folds, heavy toning, stains. 4x9.25".

The Goodman is named after the editor and publisher of the Territorial Enterprise while Samual Clemens was a writer there. Jahn H. Mills was an insurance agent in Gold Hill (Becker Atlas, 1878).

2. West Potosi Mining Company, incorporated in the State of Nevada on December 22, 1886. Location Virginia District, State of Nevada" (printed at bottom center). Certificate No. 131 issued to R.R. Grayson on January 6, 1887. Signed by Thoas Cole (president) and R.R. Grayson (secretary). Uncanceled. Black border and print. Vignette of two miners inspecting ore (top left). Printed by Bosqui & Co., San Francisco. Folds, pinholes. 4x8.75".

The Potosi Mine was discovered in 1860 and located in Virginia City, adjacent to the Chiolar ad Hale & Norcross mines. Litigation in the 1860s forced the Chollar and Potosi to merge. They split apart again in the late 1870s.
