RN-G Nevada Bank of San Francisco check dateline Virginia, Nev. Feb. 2nd, 1878 to William Garrard. Signed for Hobart, Marlette & Co. by AB Thompson (who also worked for the Hale & Norcross and the Sutro Tunnel). Reverse is signed by Garrard as well as others. William Garrard is one of the more notorious superintendents of the Carson City Mint. He served it during 1885-1889, when the mint had been forced to stop minting coins. Garrard was the only Democrat to serve as mint superintendent and unsuccessfully lobbied President Grover Cleveland to resume minting coins. Minting resumed in 1889 and continued to 1893. Garrard was not a popular figure. Before serving at the mint, he was also the warden of the Nevada State Prison and a private secretary to Nevada Governor Jewett W. Adams. While warden at the prison, Garrard's workers discovered fossilized tracks in the quarry that they believed might belong to early humans. After investigation by experts, the tracks turned out to belong to giant ground sloths. Hobart, Marlette & Co. had invested in the Virginia & Gold Hill Water Company which delivered fresh drinking water to Virginia City from Marlette Lake on Spooner Summit. They were primarily a lumber operation on the shores of Lake Tahoe and eventually renamed themselves Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Co. State: Nevada City: Virginia City Date: 1878 HWAC# 78652
