1865 Gould & Curry Mining check issued to Rev. HD Lathrop for $100. Signed by Louis Janin Jr. as supt. Signed on the back by Lathrop. US IR Stamp. Lathrop was a beloved minister and lecturer at St. John's Church in Gold Hill. He came to the West via the United States Christian Commission (Army) in the Civil War. He replaced Rev. Whitaker in Gold Hill in 1865, delivering highly regarded Protestant Episcopal sermons. He was also president of the Gold Hill Literary & Scientific Society and involved with the Odd Fellows. Numerous articles from 1865-67 mention his ability as a speaker and the positive impact he had on Gold Hill through his church. A funny article from Jan. 15, 1866 mentions a Russell quartz wagon tipping over in front of his house and dumping 16,000 lbs. of quartz ore into his cellar! Lathrop left Gold Hill in 1867 to accept a post in San Francisco.
