Lot of 10; nine are territorial. All issued to lumber merchants serving the Comstock mines. Includes: 1861 check to (illegible) Lumber Co.; eight Stateler & Arrington checks issued to lumber merchants Hiram Oyer, CJ Prescott, and Prescott & Earl, all signed by Charles Strong or Charles Bonner; and 1870 Gould & Curry check issued to Carson Lumber Co., signed by Batterman, RN-B17b. Hiram Oyer had the exclusive contract to supply the Gould & Curry Mine with lumber. Oyer came with a small group of men from Michigan to California during the Gold Rush. Oyer's partner in VC was Nelson Champlin, who had come out with him and joined him in VC in 1861. On October 20th 1864, the Gold Hill Daily News reported that Oyer had left Armitage's drug store in VC and realized he was missing $3,460 in greenbacks. Detectives were on the case!
