Lot of 2 with good content. 1) Letter datelined Scorpion Tunnel, 25th November 63. Addressed to Wm. Martin, Esq, in San Francisco from H. Grand. The letter discusses how superintendent SL Bean is very sick and "the contractors who are working into the tunnel and the workmen at the shaft wish to have their pay..." The workers have advanced the tunnel 19 ft, 4 inches. Grand will take care of the payments. Supt. Bean is "very critical." "I write you this in his cabin...his head is lost." Letter then has a postscript from the next day that says Bean has died. 2) Partial letter (first page missing), also from Grand to Martin in SF. Discusses mining in Virginia City. "Amongst the oldest and all mining works in Cedar Hill, nothing of any complete importance has really been found yet; they are all looking for the the Comstock ledge which has not been found nowhere in the northerly direction of Virginia City." "Hoping...you will have a fair examination with my views in regard of the future way of working the Scorpion ground." Dated April 28, 1864, Virginia City. Postscript mentions the Indian Queen has found better indications. (Sutro-Comstock Collection)
