1) 1864 check issued to Willis Hunton for $60. Signed by Charles Strong. Hunton is listed in the 1864 Collins directory as a fireman for the Gould & Curry Mill. For such an expensive facility, this would have been a very important job! 2) 1863 Stateler & Arrington check from the Gould & Curry Mine signed by Charles Strong as supt. Issued to Francis "Frank" Soule, who is listed in the Collins 1864 directory as a miner and a police officer! Soule was questioned in March 1865 for a murder he witnessed at Goodman & Doyle's Saloon on North C Street. John Doyle, proprietor, shot and killed Benjamin Metcalf after the latter threatened him numerous times and approached the bar. Doyle then turned himself in to Soule. (See March 13, 1865 Gold Hill Daily News). In April 1865, Sacramento Duarte, who had robbed a whiskey shop on C Street, claimed to have paid off two police officers, including Soule. We couldn't locate articles to determine if he was convicted of those charges.
