Society of Pacific Coast Pioneers promised to pay $20 in gold coin. Marked PAID. The promissory notes were issued in an attempt to raise money to reconstruct the society's hall which had burned down in a fire that swept the city in 1875. This piece was illustrated by the famous lithographer Grafton Tyler Brown. Brown was one of the first African American artist in the West to illustrate several important scenes. (Prag Collection)
