William Sharon (1821-1885) was a powerful Nevada silver magnate, banker, and politician closely tied to the Comstock Lode. As the Nevada agent of the Bank of California, he financed mines, acquired vast properties, and was instrumental in creating the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, which carried ore and supplies between the Comstock, Carson River mills, and the Central Pacific connection. He later served as a U.S. Senator from Nevada (1875-1881), though his legacy is marked by both immense wealth and controversy over ruthless business practices and personal scandals.
