Extremely rare and early pass. No. 115, issued to Geo. J. Ainsworth, general supt. of the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. Signed by Henry Yerington as general supt. Black print and white underprint on light purple cardstock. Britton, Rey, & Co. Reverse has strip of adhesive, otherwise clean. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad was incorporated in 1868 by William Sharon of the Bank of California to transport Comstock Lode ore and timber between Virginia City and Carson City, with the 21.5-mile route completed in 1870 under the supervision of Henry M. Yerington. In 1872, a 31.5-mile extension was completed to Reno, linking the line with the Central Pacific Railroad and transforming the V&T into a vital commercial artery for the mining economy. At its peak, the 52-mile short line hauled freight and passengers for major operations like the Consolidated Virginia, Chollar-Potosi, and Gould & Curry mines, earning a reputation as one of the most profitable and picturesque railroads in the American West before shutting down in 1950.
