Low cert. No. 5! Issued to A. Hayward on June 21, 1869 for 500 shares. Signed by T. A. Tritle, sec. and William Sharon, pres. Alvinza Hayward found his first success in mining in the California Gold Rush, investing in the Eureka Mine in Amador County and then later in the Utica Mine in Angel's Camp. He also invested heavily in the Comstock Lode and had close connections to Sharon and the Bank of California Crowd (once serving as the bank's director). However, he worked with John P Jones in 1872 to take over the Crown Point Mine in Gold Hill which played into the end of Sharon's reign and the beginning of Mackay's. (Sharon would invest heavily in the Belcher next door which was actually the better producer.) About two months before this stock was issued, the Yellow Jacket/Crown Point/Kentuck fire created havoc with these Hayward/Sharon mining companies. Nice railroad vignette and 2 adhesive RN stamps.

Inc. March 1, 1868, incorp. 1868 and dates of operation 1870- 1950. Built in 19th century as a freight railroad to service Comstock Lode mining communities in NW NV. Route ran from Reno to state capital in Carson City then split into two branches. One line went to Minden, NV and other Virginia City, NV. The original line from Virginia City to Carson City started construction in 1869 to haul ore, lumber and supplies for the famous Comstock Lode silver mines. Within a few years, William Sharon established the Bank of California as the primary Comstock monopoly. Sharon represented changing times, corporate control, and the loss of frontier honesty and self reliance. His network of mills and mines survived while exploiting poorer ores between richer discoveries. With political machinations, he won state subsidies to construct Virginia and Truckee Railroad, which transported ore to mills then returning with other goods, including lumber. The first track and ceremonial first spike was driven on Sept. 28, 1869 by superintendent and vice-president H. M. Yerington, with the first passenger train pulling into Virginia City on Jan. 29, 1870. He was also a construction superintendent and president of the Carson and Colorado Railroad.
