Group of two from the Prag collection: "Elephant Deep Hydraulic Mine Volcano Cal;" and "Elephant Deep Hydraulic Gold Mining Volcano Cal." Volcano is named for it's location in a bowl-shaped valley which early miners believed was caused by a volcano. Dating back to the late 1850's, it was originally nicknamed "Crater City". A post office was established in 1851; and by 1853 there were 11 stores, 6 hotels, 3 bakeries, and 3 saloons. Hydraulic operations began in 1855 and were idle by by 1867.
