Volcano Water and Mining Company, Amador County, Oct. 9th, 1855.
The receipt no. 156 is for $50 for the use of water upon the canal of the company, signed by W. A. Eliason as secretary and Geo. Munckton(?) as president.
Item measures 4 1/2 X 6 7/8 inches.

This is a receipt for the purchase of water from the Volcano Water and mining company, which had bought water rights in addition to its mining operation.

In the early days of this gold rich area, it was reported that one could pickup gold nuggets by hand. By the end, $90 million in placer gold deposits were mined in the area.

Volcano (settled 1849) was a small, but culturally advance community, that had grown to 300 houses by 1851, forming the first theater group and the first debate society in California in 1854 according to J. M. Collins.
In the first Volcano weekly ledger from 27 Oct, 1855, the town of Volcano is mentioned for its huge, upcoming changes, hydraulic mining that started that year, a massive undertaking for the region.
