c. 1910s. Bergman is listed in the 1912-13 and 1914-15 Polk as operating a saloon and billiards in Ruth. By 1920, he had a store at Tiptop (he had bought a half-interest of the townsite in 1911 from the Ely Packing Company). Tragically, his store in Ruth was held-up in November 1924 by a trio of bandits, and Bergman was fatally shot in the robbery. Ruth, Nevada was founded in 1903 as a bustling company town for the copper-rich Robinson Mining District in White Pine County. Managed heavily by corporate owners who banned saloons and brothels within town limits, the settlement grew to nearly 2,300 residents by the onset of the Great Depression. Known colloquially as a "traveling town," Ruth was physically relocated multiple times to make room for the expansion of massive open-pit operations like the Liberty Pit, which eventually swallowed the original townsite. Not listed in 1990. Possibly unique.
