Lot includes three 8 X 10 autographed photos of Masajiro "Mike Kawato", the former Japanese fighter pilot who shot down U.S. Ace "Pappy Boyington on January 3rd 1944. Two are black and white and one is color. All are signed with gold ink. Mike Kawato was the only WWII Japanese Zero Pilot and war ace, living in America at the time he first came face to face with Pappy Boyington in 1977, 33 years after shooting him down in the South Pacific. Kawato recorded 19 confirmed "kills" of Allied planes and Boyington shot down 27 Japanese planes, both men later published books about their experiences, and both were able to put the past behind them and embrace in friendship on the day they re-united in Los Angelas. Included with this lot is a printed newspaper article and a printed copy of the more detailed by Stephen Sherman (published July 1999) and available online at Acepilots.com. Other items include a color, glossy 8 X 12 image of Reynolds numbered artwork (#1077) with small images of both pilots under the picture of the planes, with a brief summary of the events of January 3rd, 1944 and the dated signature of both Boyington and Kawato. The last photograph is an 8 X 10 Blk & Wht Photograph of the famous Black Sheep Squadron that was engaged in combat with the Zero Fighters that fateful day, autographed by Colonel Ed Harper, James Hill and Robert McClurg, with a Certificate of Authenticity from Nostalgic Aviation included.
