This letter of surrender is typed in English signed by (German) Colonel Gerhard Wilck and witnessed by (German) Captain E rhard Dabringhaus. This is the first surrender by Germans on German soil dated 21 October, 1944 at Aachen, Germany. No American or allied signatures are presented. This document must have been typed at the Headquarters of the 1st U.S. Infantry Division APO 1, U.S. Army for acceptance. Colonel Wilck is asking for consideration that his troops be treated as prisoners of war in accordance to the Geneva Convention of 1929. This document has "SECRET" stamped both top and bottom center under "UNCLASSIFIED" in black ink. An historic document to survive WWII. Colonel Wilck's military career was essentially over. His predecessor was stripped of his command and sent the the Eastern front as a private.
