Historic WWII Iwo Jima Flag Photograph of First Flag Raising atop Mount Suribachi in 1945. The B&W photo is signed by Charles W. Lindberg, standing by the first raised flag. It is little-known that (2) flags were raised: the first at around 10:30 AM, then the second larger flag was raised about (2) hours later, and immortalized by Joe Rosenthal's world-famous February 23rd photograph. The first flag was replaced and safeguarded by the Marine Commander, as he feared it would be taken as a souvenir. Per the attached article, no believed Lindberg's story about the first and second flag raisings when he returned home. This article is certified by Christopher Stikel Autographs, dated September 28, 2007. Also included is a reference story about Franklin Sousley, one of the (6) flag-raisers of the second flag. Per the included account, he was killed in action March 21, 1945 by a sniper. Historic references, rare and valuable. [
