Cutting over the Sierra crest was a major haul road for wagons, often seen in historical photographs by R. Waters of Truckee, and later Gold Hill. When these wagons hit the steep slopes, they were connected together by these cast iron hooks and pin ties, we are told. These were found along the old road by bottle diggers decades ago.
