Typed letter on War Department letterhead. Dated May 12, 1904. Addressed to Hon. Eugene F. Ware, Commissioner of Pensions. It is a letter of introduction and recommendation for Dr. J.R. Lincoln of Millbury, Massachusetts for a vacancy on the board of Pension Commissioners for Worcester County. Signed "Wm. H. Taft"Deep folds, otherwise clean. 9 x 5.5" Taft was appointed Secretary of War by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. As Roosevelt's handpicked successor, Taft easily won the nomination for his party and was elected president in 1908. Frustrated with Taft's conservatism, Roosevelt belatedly tried to win the 1912 Republican nomination. He failed, walked out, and founded a third party, the Progressive, so-called "Bull Moose" Party, which called for wide-ranging progressive reforms. The split allowed the Democrats to win the White House. Date: 1904 Location: Washington, District of Columbia HWAC# 60144
