Dr. Nicholas Stith was the pioneer in developing the celebrated Coal Fields of Chatham.The brothers bought 1,000 shares in the Ward Gold Mine in 1854. It was one of the largest gold mines in the Cid District. This obviously lead to (or was part of) the owning of said company. This ground was worked as early as 1842. It was chartered in 1852. The land was a 400 acre purchase from John Ward. This mine was in the heart of the North Carolina Gold Rush.
