Ironstone wash basin recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. It is 13 inches in diameter on top, 7 inches tall, and 6.5 inches in diameter at the base. Hallmark on base: A large emblem with a lion at left, unicorn at the right, crown in center over crest surrounded by: "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pence", Latin for "Shame on him who thinks evil of it." Bottom banner: "Dieu Et Mon Droi", Latin for "God and My Right". Bottom of emblem in old English print are the initials // J. F. //. This refers to J. Fernyhough, who was a china/ironstone manufacturer in Staffordshire, in partnership with J. Adams and S. Hartshorne, until October, 1853. (10/4/1853, Liverpool Mercury, and 10/7/1853, Coventry Standard). This piece may have been purchased as part of the initial outfitting of the ship for its maiden voyage in October 1853 as the SS George Law, the original name for the S.S. Central America. Condition in general is exemplary with the exception of the underside of an area that was apparently at a contact between two differing sediment layers on the ocean floor, such that the porcelain finish has chipped off in about a dozen areas.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
