Very rare, fully issued, Washington National Monument Society Certificate, 1852. Issued to Dr. E. L. Beadle for $5, May 11, 1852, signed by I.H. Eckloff, clerk. 7 3/4 x 10 1/2", excellent condition. Several of these certificates have hit the marketplace over the years in unissued form. This piece, fully issued and in very fine condition is a topper. Construction of the monument took place during two periods: 1848-1854 and 1879-1884. The Society formed in 1833. They described their proposed monument as follows: "It is proposed that the contemplated monument shall be like him in whose honor it is to be constructed, unparalleled in the world, and commensurate with the gratitude, liberality, and patriotism of the people by whom it is to be erected ... [It] should blend stupendousness with elegance, and be of such magnitude and beauty as to be an object of pride to the American people, and of admiration to all who see it. Its material is intended to be wholly American, and to be of marble and granite brought from each state, that each state may participate in the glory of contributing material as well as in funds to its construction." Completed in 1884, it was the tallest building in the world until the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889.
