3.5x2.25" photo by Sutterly of Virginia City, of Chief Washoe Jim or Captain Jim, as it appears he went under both names. He is seated and wearing a military jacket. He was Washoe Chief in the 1860's. He was present as Sergeat-at-Arms, with Mark Twain as Assistant, in 1867 in the Third House of the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Democrat notes Jacob Chase took him to the mint, the markets and some of the machine shops. Gen. Wright allowed him to fire a large gun at Alcatraz and he "was quite elated with the noise he made in the world". Jim's wife was killed by a drunken Indian who was furnished alcohol by "a vagabond white man with liquor enough to make him devilish". She was struck in the head. "Capt. Jim immediately mounted his pony, and started poste haste, for a new wife, the minute the breath was out of her body". as per Carson Daily Appeal. Jim died at Pine Nut in 1868. "Jim was a good, though, very Dirty Red Man. He had a great regard for truth, and a most tremendous and irrepressible gift of gab" as per Gold Hill Daily News. Photo has some upper matte wear and the photo shows some age. Please inspect.
