Gopher District, Calaveras County (listed in text of the stock). Incorporated July 30th, 1863 and capitalized at $450,000; 4500 shares at $100 per. Certificate # 150-200, issued to T. J. Keys for 50 shares on Sept. 4th, 1863 in Stockton. Signed by S.E. Yates as Secretary and Wm. H. Lyons as President. Vignette of an Indian woman with bow and arrows on the far left and a large mining mill in the center. Black ink printed on crème paper. Measures 5.25 x 9.5"Minor wear. Very nice! TJ Keys came to California in 1850. He tried mining at Hangtown with no success, then moved on to Sacramento, San Francisco, and Stockton. He formed a mining party of 23 men and headed to Chinese Camp, then Fine Gold Gulch. Not finding success in mining, he eventually started a freight business that operated between Stockton and the mining camps running 67 mules. The bulk of his freighting business was done with the Mariposa Estate. When the freight business failed, Keys became steward of the Insane Asylum at Stockton. He also served as an assemblyman for San Joaquin. [Ref: An Illustrated History of San Joaquin County, California, 1890] Ken Prag Collection
