Choice "trepanning" surgical kit made by John Weigand & Thomas Snowden, 15 N 5th Street, Philadelphia, circa 1850-1855. The nearly square rectangular box is made of rosewood with brass reinforced corners and a blank brass plate on top center. The company was in business 1824-1855. This kit has no side swinging double latches reportedly typical of the pre-1850 models. It has a single key sliding latch closure. The Weigand & Snowden punch is found on the scalpel. The kit is in excellent condition with only very minor rust of some places on the polished steel. a blood stain is on the bottom lest of the felt top cover. This is they type of kit that may have been used during the California Gold Rush period. 9.25 x 6.25 x 2.25" tall. A few blemishes to the top of the box.
