Never seen by us before! Extremely rare. This is for the firm of Thomas Wells & Company, who started operations August 27th, 1849 in a small (15 x 18') building on Montgomery Street in San Francisco. He was associated with Willis & Co. of Boston, who was his brother-in-law. In September 1849, he moved to the first brick building in San Francisco! He became Wells & Co. on January 1st, 1850 with Willis as a fifty percent partner. On May 4, 1851, a fire wiped out his business. [Ref: Cross, V1, pp. 52-3] Exchange is dated Sept. 14th, 1850. Issued to Mary Penning for $30, payable at Drew Robinson & Co., New York. Willis & Co. Boston, also listed. Signed Wells & Co. Red print on blue paper. Small nautical vignette. No printer listed. 4.5 x 9" Deep folds, soiling (more evident on reverse).
